The Detroit Tigers have optioned prospect, Dawel Lugo.
The Detroit Tigers have optioned Dawel Lugo to Triple-A Toledo so that he can continue working on his transition to second base. Lugo was originally seen as a third baseman when the Tigers acquired him. However, when Jeimer Candelario was acquired the Tigers moved him to second base.
Lugo is currently the 12th ranked Tigers prospect according to MLB Pipeline.Per MLB Pipeline
If Lugo isn’t penciled in as an everyday third baseman, there is less pressure on his bat. The Tigers think he could end up being a solid offensive-minded second baseman when all is said and done, knowing he could contribute as a bat-first utility man if the need arises.
Lugo will continue to get reps at second baseman down in Toledo. With Dixon Machado expected to be the starter at second on Opening Day. Lugo playing second in the majors likely won’t happen until Jose Iglesias is no longer a member of the organization.
The Tigers are expected to try to trade Iglesias, but if that doesn’t happen the Tigers shortstop will hit free agency next offseason.
